Craig Alexander: Australian Iron Man Daddy
Avid followers of Craig know that despite all the titles he has won, ‘Daddy’ is the one he likes best. So it comes as no surprise to see the Australian iron man daddy at Ironman Melbourne 2013 struggling to hold back the tears when he spoke about the arrival of the newest addition to ‘Team Alexander’, Lani May. Ever the professional, Craig refused to use the birth of his baby daughter so close to the race as an excuse for his third place finish. He finished behind Spain’s Eneko Llanos and Belgian Ironman world record holder Marino Vanhoenacker, who came in 2nd and 1st respectively.
“I think whatever you lack in sleep in a week like that, you make up for in adrenalin and emotion,” he told the Courier Mail. “I think what happened on Tuesday this week was one of the best things that has ever happened in my life.” It’s precisely these qualities that have endured us toward Craig as both the champion athlete and champion dad. It also appears the Alexander family may see a couple more budding champion athletes in the future. Lucy has already begun competing in triathlons, as well as soccer, gymnastics and swimming! With such drive we might just be looking at a future triathlon champion. Austin is a bit younger but has already grown an affinity with the ball, and has also already learnt how to ride a 2 wheel bike. Could we be seeing a future football star?
So, if Craig’s kids were to remember him by one thing, what would it be? “That I trained hard and I always did my best. My message to the kids is it is not about winning, but about doing your best”, is what he told triafatherhood.com in an interview late last year. Hard work has always been synonymous with Craig Alexander the athlete and it looks like it is no different for Craig Alexander the dad.
