Craig Alexander Triathlete Training Day Part Three
A continuation from part two, Craig Alexander talks about some of his experiences as a professional triathlete training for the Ironman World Championships.
“A lot of people have come along for the ride, our family, sponsors, and I owe it to them as much as I owe it to myself to do the best I can everyday. Earlier in the summer there were days where it was hard to go out and train, but not because I didn’t want to, but because our daughter was playing soccer and I wanted to go and watch.
As you get older there are other things in life that become more important than your career, but it gives you a nice balance too because the training is still important to me. I still love my job and I love to get out there everyday, and I think as you progress through your life, get married and have kids, the things you need are supportive people around you. I owe a great debt to my wife. I wouldn’t still be racing at this age if it wasn’t for the support that I get from her and our immediate family. They’ve sacrificed so much, and that’s what motivates me as well. It’s not that I need to win to repay them that sacrifice. I think they just enjoy seeing me do something that I love to do.
It certainly makes me push a little harder, and it makes me get through the times, those mornings where you wake up and you feel like you’ve already been fifteen rounds with Tyson. It’s easy for me to get out there and do it because I know I’m not the only one sacrificing. It’s a team effort and I carry their hopes and dreams with me as well so its very easy to be motivated.”
