Craig discusses his past, present and future in AT interview

December 12th, 2013

Australian Triathlete magazine’s interview with Craig is finally out following the release of their December issue. In it he discusses the decision behind retiring from iron-distance races, the possibility of racing Ironman Melbourne, the importance of coaching and mentoring, and pursuing other endeavours in the future.

On his decision to retire from iron-distance races, Craig mentioned his desire to race more often and closer to home, as well as the responsibility of being a father to a young family as the main contributing factors.

“Not that I didn’t enjoy that, I love it, but it just becomes a merry-go-round of Kona, a month off, start training, Melbourne [Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship Melbourne], a month off and start thinking about Kona again”, Crowie told Australian Triathlete.

“When you’re in a different country and you’ve set up your home and your husband is out training six to seven hours a day and you’ve got three kids – Lucy is home schooled as well- things are just harder”.

Adamant that he won’t do Kona again, Craig has not entirely ruled out on racing in a full Ironman, with Melbourne possibly on his radar. He has also confirmed his involvement in Ironman 70.3 Putrajaya and the US Pro Champs next year.

“It just seemed like the right thing to do, to step away from Ironman racing, but that being said I had a couple of meetings with Geoff Meyer (CEO Ironman Asia-Pacific) and I thought about Melbourne, so I’m not totally against it, but I’m certainly not going back to Kona”.

Craig has revealed he is in the midst of setting up a formal coaching business.

“I’m trying to recruit people who I’ve worked with or trained with – those who have been mentors or advisors to me. I want to put together a team of people who I’ve used and make them available to others”.
